    Oscillation Ring

Hinged to hold different positions, this sterling silver ring is speckled with fresh water pearls, sky blue and pink topaz, and citrines set in 14k yellow gold. It measures 4.8 x 1 x 7.7 cm and was created in 2021.  To be worn with love and care.

Beginning with my natural impulse to embrace movement and interaction in my jewellery design, I took this call as an opportunity to exaggerate that impulse and follow my heart. Oscillating between my desire for small scale precision and joyful exuberance, I was drawn to a colourful combination of gemstones, large pearls and a multidimensional structure. Oscillation Ring is hinged in such a way that it both holds its shape and can be moved into different configurations by the wearer.

He is a Shadow of his Former Self is a playful ring created from sterling silver, copper polymer and resin. Measuring at 5.3 cm L x 4.7 cm W x 4.1 cm H and made in 2021.  Size 7.5  To be worn with love and care.

    Lobster counterpoints:
Gastronomic indulgence vs. dining impracticality; Iconic exoticism vs. predictable regionality; Delightful taste vs. malingering odour.

These extremes of effect can characterize its impact as camp culinary theatre embodied in a single object. However in its original, full-sized, biodegradable form, the lobster is arguably not the wisest choice for a wearable object.

These rings present our subject in a much more practical and durable form—while still provoking (if only vicariously) the same complexly diverse reactions, from wearer and viewer alike.

    Floral brass knuckles.  Hand-formed from coloured porcelain, they measure 7 L x 5.5 W x 9 H cm and were made in 2021.

Kathy Ouellette graduated from Visual Arts at University Laval and from the Maison des Métiers d’Art de Québec, in the ceramic department. She works with ceramics in a versatile way. She has exhibited in various solos and collectives in Quebec and abroad, notably in Belgium and South Korea. With more than 20 years of expertise in ceramics, she is developing new series on the object in relation to the body.

This series of rings was created to be playful, dramatic and romantic.
The extravagant shapes and swirls are reminiscent of baroque design, merging leaves, flowers and arabesques. Each ring is built as a small sculpture.

Kathy also enjoys playing with the contrast of a soft material that will become hard as stone. The search of contrast between the opulence of the shapes and the sobriety of the colour drives the artist. The concept suggests gold and brilliance, but in the end and by taste for paradox, the artist translates opulence and theatricality through matte and charred textures.

Creating jewelry offers an intimacy and commitment to refinement that speaks to my sensibilities. Whether with intent or not, one’s art is autobiographical expression.

My formal artistic biography began in 1973 at Sheridan College School of Design in Ontario where I majored in textiles. The transition from sculptural textiles to body ornament was a logical development which represents a distillation of artistic focus.

The materials that I find and am drawn to are most often the inspiration for my creations. The cocoons and feathers in my ‘Camp’ rings reference my background in textiles. Using materials out of context is a consistent aspect of my work giving them an ambiguity that draws the viewer’s attention, questions preconceived notions of value and suggests new meaning. As with all the material I have used, their possibilities continue to unfold and reveal themselves to me.

“One can be serious about the frivolous, frivolous about the serious.”  Susan Sontag

Self-Indulgent is an exercise in material exploration and form, breaking free of the confinement of any boundaries or rules: the type of boundaries we put on ourselves that only hold us back.

I dethrone the seriousness by injecting colour into this ring with a guava link shank and a large cobalt blue piece of glass cut like a gemstone. The exaggerated mass, built with hundreds of shell like-pieces of polymer clay, sprawls across the fingers, floating by like a cloud.

Lost and Found relates to the love/hate relationships that exist between humans and the outdoors. This relationship takes time and patience, appreciating the repetitive and experience to trust the intuitive. When developing these skills and when faced with challenge, we seek comfort in the artificial and human established signs: often a flash of bright paint on a rock or a plastic placard nailed to a tree. Indicating that another human has been there at another time, we find temporary comfort in these artificial and obnoxious elements. This series of rings is an object based narrative of the many times I’ve been temporarily misplaced in the mountains.

    Rose Rock Ring

Calcite set on sterling silver. This 65 million year old stone was found on Ellesmere Island in the far North of Nunavut. The ring measures 4.5cm L x 5cm W x 6cm H. To be worn with love and care.

The reward is in the act of observing. Stone colours, textures, the shape of leaves, the ebb and flow of the sea, the changing seasons - all of these things continue to inspire my work. A gesture of thanks and appreciation.

At first it was a technical challenge - to really learn to see the natural world and to develop techniques to capture a sense of it in metal. But as time has passed I am now realizing another purpose: Connection. People connecting to place, places connected to each other, and our shared connection to the world around us.

“The moon casts 3 shadows, you know.”

One of my students said that to me almost 20 years ago. I am still thinking about it.

    Mine Minerai (Salt Coll.)
    Copper, silver, salt and patina, 8 cm L x 5.5 cm W x 2.5 cm H, 2018  Size 5.5.

I create work in relationships with specific places. By collaborating with my surroundings, I reveal rich aspects of each location. I had participated in artistic residencies in the Canary Islands (SP), Seville (SP), and in Iles de la Madeleine (CA) where I discovered my interest in working with local materials such as basalt, cork and salt.

I use materials that have a smaller environmental footprint, choosing either natural (wood, salt, wax), recycled (plastic, metals, fabrics), or found objects. I do not hesitate to use delicate or ephemeral materials in some of my jewelry. I favor a project approach with each piece using materials, often non-traditional to jewellery, to create a common theme.

Although I instinctively approach the material using techniques from jewellery, no material is excluded. While the jewellery created can be friable, over-sized or over-weight, it is still meant to be worn.

Et tu Brute, or the Finger Ring in Scotch elm, sterling silver, reproduction of ancient Roman coin depicting Brutus, mother of pearl, cubic zirconia and Afghani goat fur. This ring measures 7 cm L x 5.5 cm W x 3.5 cm H and was made in 2021.   Size 6.5-7  To be cautiously worn with love and care.

Making custom jewellery can be stressful at times, so sometimes a boy just wants to have fun.

This is a result of that. All the bits and bobs used were lying around. The finger I carved from a branch blown to my door step.  The silver was all pulled from my scrap bucket. Throw in a CZ, some fur, mother of pearl, mixed together with solder and krazy glue, and voila!

The result is gaudy, humourous, and I'm sure a bit shocking to the more sedate members of our society, and ironic from the point of view of Caesar, who was being stabbed to death at the time when he uttered the now famous line "et tu Brute", or as I like to translate it "up yours Brutus!".

To think that he brought up the brat and raised him as his own... I mean the audacity of the little S-camp!

“Glamping” and “Bottoms Up!” revel in Camp, inciting irrepressible joy. Cocktail rings were once defiant, emerging during Prohibition, when a woman raised a ring-festooned hand audaciously requesting an illicit alcoholic drink. They also symbolized women’s emancipation during the 1920s, a time of female rebellion and increasing independence.

These rings salute insurrection and invite play. They are a spectacle, flamboyant and fabulous, fiercely opposing the boring, the bland and the banal. These rings ignite performance, and inspire movement.

The wearer of “Glamping” flounces Sontag’s “fugitive sensibility”, gliding by in the silvery cloud of an emergency blanket erupting from the peak of its silver tent, the serious rendered frivolous. A glittering pandemic boa, it flashes, rustles, waves, its wearer sinuous yet subversive as protective material becomes exuberance. “Glamping” also confronts the disparity between those who think of helium balloons and those who think of hellish migrant ruins.

Like Camp, these rings will leave the uninitiated stirred and a bit shaken. Let’s drink to that.

My work encompasses moments in time from the past and present. By drawing inspiration from colour, texture and geometric form I amplify and distill the essence of memories of people and places. I pay attention to the cultural voices of my ancestry from India and Persia along with the story telling traditions of my British upbringing.

Leicester Square is a reminder of the chaos that is bound up tightly amongst the Saturday night crowds of Leicester Square, London, UK. With the fraying away of revellers at the edges.

I enjoy creating works that embody the spirit of stories and emotions encouraging wearers to decipher the meaning of a piece as if getting to know a friend.
