Born in Hungary in 1954, Istvan Zsako studied sculpture at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. He immigrated to Canada in 1988. Zsako's forms have a distinct playfulness; however, many of his pieces take the form of soldiers bearing tiny weapons. He admits this is a result of growing up in a Europe that ‘has never had a break of fifty peaceful years’. He has received many awards, including the Hungarian Art Council Award (1985), the Scholarship of Rome (1987), and the Biennial Prize at the 8th Hungarian Drawing Biennial (1996). Zsako maintains a studio in both Baie Verte, NB and Hungary.
