    Hold Me: Anatomical Heart, 2022.  Layers of antique sheet music from 1723 to 1945 make up the surface of this mixed medium sculpture. There is protective UV coating on the precious paper.

    I taught my daughter to knit at a very young age and she was able to make her own patterns by the time she was 10. She made a pattern for and knit me an anatomical heart for my birthday when she was 12. I was delighted. Her fascination with vascular phenomenon has continued and she is now a nurse practitioner. I have made many vascular sculptures to echo my deep love for my daughter and the elemental love I have for sculpture. It was clear to me that I should make vascular hearts in my papier-mâché investigations because music truly is the landscape of the heart. Often the paper I use dictates how I proceed with my final compositions. The HOLD ME heart is a clear example of this. The song I used to make my final shaping is from 1892 and had a simple beautiful title which I was drawn to putting in the very center of the heart. While I try not to have any words on most works these were too powerful for me to cover up. It is a love story about how our hearts respond to music, in celebration, sorrow and healing. Our hearts do truly hold the music of life.

    "I am a multi-lingual and multi-cultural sculptor. Music was (and still is) a most tangible link to culture for me. I grew up moving every two years. While we were posted far and wide, my parents, an Irish mother from the north of Ireland and a French Canadian military officer with proud Métis heritage, made sure we were given strong links to our mixed heritage. I have collected antique music since childhood and a few years ago I stood on the threshold of moving from a production based life with my twig letters to one of larger sculptures to delve deeper into the dialogue of healing through artistic practice and provide me with new challenges of materials exploration and subject matter. My papier-mâché works using antique sheet music seeks to celebrate and repurpose the best and worst quality music from my great paper era collection (1723-1945). I began with a Buffalo, a guide to protect me in my journey symbol of abundance, music is also the gateway to healing, in abundance."
