    Two Fields Meet

Earth Ochre, foraged earth pigments, hand ground and painted on linen with stitching. 2021, 14" x 17".

My work investigates how people mark the land and how we come to know “place”.
I am interested in patterns of settlement and how land is structured by humans and by
    nature.
Several years ago, a friend introduced me to the word “Ecotone”. An ecotone is an area
where contrasting ecosystems butt up against one another and meet. This creates
energetic space…the line where meadow meets forest, the transition of land to water,
the active movement of tree lines shifting,,…
The works exhibited in Touch, have a sense of boundaries, edges, and the meeting of
two distinct communities. The works are made with earth pigments found and collected
    in several remote locations.

    Visible  Hemispheres #11

    Handmade paper (abaca, linen thread),  27.5 x 27.5 x 1.5 in / 70 x 70 x 4 cm, unframed.

The title for the Visible Hemispheres series was suggested by an old engraving
that depicts the known lunar surface, identifying the meridian of contact between
the visible and invisible hemispheres of the moon. But the printed image can only
portray the face that is illuminated. The other half of this familiar sphere remains
a mystery. Still, the visible hemisphere speaks to our imagination, encouraging
us to reach beyond immediate physical circumstance, to expand our thinking to
    include that other, shadow twin.

Ten outstanding artists have lived and worked in the same milieu for the past decades, from the defining days of contemporary Canadian craft. Three are laureates of the country's highest award for craft, the Saidye Bronfman Award. Contemporary craft evolves; these artists' sustained explorations of their mediums are an important force of this change.
