Like a cocktail ring, Anastasia Pindera’s contemporary jewellery sets out to make a bold statement. Her conceptual metalworks focus on the body as subject; their meaning is generated by drawing upon well-known jewellery types and visual references, and their socio-political context.
Currently with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Pindera explores patriarchal constructions, taboos and empowerment through jewellery and the body as a miniature monument. Her designs are hand carved into wax and cast in bronze or sterling silver. Pindera’s work aims to challenge the goal of perfectionism in fine jewellery and the body. For example, the Menstruation Ring features stones cast-in-place, a technique chosen for the potential imperfections of this process or the Leg Ring’s rough surface finish meant to represent body hair. The ultimate intention of her jewellery is to challenge social conventions, and to encourage critical dialogue and empowerment.
