 Tingmiatornis arctica - Aurora

Baltic birch panel, pyrography wood-burned, painted, varnished, with small porcelain herons and dried wildflowers embedded in epoxy resin

H122 x L240 x D5 mm

The rapid thawing of the arctic is revealing many new archeological finds. This work reflects upon the recently discovered prehistoric toothed arctic bird Tingmiatornis arctica which resembled a cormorant and was alive during the Cretacious Period when the arctic had a semi-tropical climate. Through small resin panels embedded in the wings of the work, I stage dream-like interactions between people and this bird from long ago, set in a semi-tropical garden, to express how human beings around the globe are attempting to emotionally process current findings about climate change and its significance.
