Expanding Block Universe

Porcelain sculpture, under glaze painted and glazed

From the exhibition A Season for Everything – a Journey Through Time and Space (Gardiner Museum, Toronto)

A structure akin to Habitat 67 references the Expanding Block Universe Theory of Time or Growing Block View. Here, the past and the present exist and the future does not exist. The present is objective, like a moving spotlight. By the passage of time, more and more of the world comes into being; therefor the block universe is growing. The Expanding Block View is an alternative to both Eternalism (according to which past, present, and future all exist) and Presentism (according to which only the present exists).

 55 x 40 x 40 cm

Please note, this work is currently on display at the Gardiner Museum until July 2018
