    Tingmiatornis arctica - Sunset Cruise

Whale sculpture plus single bowl in porcelain

    H40 x L40 xD50 cm

    2020

Scientists have predicted that due to the increasing melting of the sea-ice of the Northwest Passage, animal species from the Arctic Ocean, Pacific and Atlantic Ocean will interact in unprecedented ways. Warmer water from the Atlantic is increasingly flowing into colder Arctic water, raising its temperature which reduces the formation of sea-ice and also affecting the halocline layer between deep oceanic heat and the fresher water at the surface.

The rapid thawing of the arctic is revealing many new archeological finds. The recently discovered prehistoric toothed arctic bird Tingmiatornis arctica is used as a visual reference in this work, alongside the humpback whale, a species spotted in arctic waters outside its normal range. I play with the forms of these animals which I intertwine and abstract to create a surrealist organic landscape. In this landscape, I stage dream-like interactions between humans and wildlife to express how human beings around the globe are attempting to emotionally process current findings about climate change and its significance. In the construction of this work, I play with the idea of the fragility that is inherent to clay by creating a sense of peril in the delicacy with which the piece is balanced. A vessel is placed on a structure that suggests the flippers of a humpback whale or perhaps bones, perhaps a landscape. The reference is open – we are given information but not enough to form a concrete idea.

In this dream-like setting, I see the ocean space as symbolic of creativity. I imagine this bubble of creative silence is shifting in a perilous way and I attempt to express a sadness at the loss, the fear for the future. I also wish to pay respect to this incredible beauty and force with which nature is imbued and thus feel hopeful that these changes can be reversed and these wild places can be preserved.

    Halocline

Bowl on small flippers base in porcelain

    H42 x L40 x D26 cm

    2020

The Arctic Ocean contains a natural buffer layer between the colder, fresher waters of the Arctic and the warmer, saltier waters of the Atlantic – the halocline layer. As sea ice melts and retreats, researchers have noted the weakening of this halocline layer and the increase in temperature and salinity of the Arctic waters. This is atlantification – the warming of the Arctic.

The halocline is a border separating two different worlds in the ocean. It is a world unto itself, rich in ocean detritus and creatures that feed upon it.

I have used the idea of a border between two worlds as a way to represent the world we live in now. Until recently we have lived in a relatively stable climate; now we are experiencing a new instability, accompanied by the knowledge that the imminent future is at a tipping point regarding events of extreme acceleration that will vastly change the planet. In the current era, we sit at a vantage point, able to envision different outcomes. In this work, the idea of sight is represented by the Arctic sea birds. The impact of atlantification affects the growth or decline of sea bird populations. Like canaries in a coal mine, these birds and the changes that can be observed in their diets act as messengers of atlantification.

The aim of this piece is to express how human beings around the globe are attempting to emotionally process current findings about climate change and its significance.

In the construction of this work, I play with the idea of the fragility that is inherent to clay. By balancing a central vessel form, the work is creating a sense of peril through delicate balance. A vessel is placed on a structure that suggests the flippers of a whale or perhaps bones, perhaps a landscape. The work only alludes to these visual references, thus the interpretation is open and destabilizing.

Tingmiatornis arctica - Lilac and Smoke

    Acrylic on canvas

    H50 x L40 cm

    2021

The rapid thawing of the arctic is revealing many new archeological finds. This work reflects upon the recently discovered prehistoric toothed arctic bird Tingmiatornis arctica which resembled a cormorant and was alive during the Cretaceous Period when the arctic had a semi-tropical climate.

In this work, we are presented at first-glance with an atmospheric scene of cormorants nest-building, bathing and flying. Smoke rising from the water and the hills make us think of mist or a forest fire; this leads us to notice the teeth of the birds and transports us back 90 million years to a time when Tingmiatornis arctica flew over the semi-tropical arctic waters and mountains, which could erupt at any moment.

    H56 x L72 x D50 cm / 17 kgs

    2020

The arctic ice is melting at an unprecedented rate and it is poised at an irreversible tipping point. The people of the world are watching these changes—some apprehensive; some readying themselves with more technology to take advantage of the changing possibilities, increasing their number of icebreakers.

The rapid thawing of the arctic is revealing many new archeological findings. The recently discovered prehistoric toothed arctic bird Tingmiatornis arctica is used as a visual reference in this work, alongside the humpback whale, a species spotted in arctic waters outside its normal range. I play with the forms of animals which are intertwined with the form of an icebreaker ship and abstracted to create a surrealist organic landscape. In this landscape, I create dream-like interactions between humans and wildlife to express how human beings around the globe are attempting to emotionally process current findings about climate change and its significance.

By constructing this work in two parts balancing together, I hope to explore the idea of fragility that is inherent to clay to convey the sense of peril that surrounds the subject, as seen in the delicacy with which the piece is balanced. A vessel is placed on a structure that suggests the flippers of a whale or perhaps bones, perhaps a landscape. The reference is open –  visual information is limited to create a sense of the unknown.

The rapid thawing of the arctic is revealing many new archeological finds. This work reflects upon the recently discovered prehistoric toothed arctic bird Tingmiatornis arctica which resembled a cormorant and was alive during the Cretacious Period when the arctic had a semi-tropical climate. Through small resin panels embedded in the wings of the work, I stage dream-like interactions between people and this bird from long ago, set in a semi-tropical garden, to express how human beings around the globe are attempting to emotionally process current findings about climate change and its significance.

Tree Arch in ceramic and glazes from the series, A Season for Everything – a Journey Through Time and Space

A visual tale in porcelain which playfully engages with the notion of time and space. The works follow eight friends who represent eight phases of the moon and the notion of passing time. The characters travel through the seasons, and along their journey, they encounter different representations of the history of philosophical thought on the nature of time and space.

If time and space, as sages say, Are things which cannot be,
The sun which does not feel decay No greater is than we.
So why, Love, should we ever pray To live a century?
The butterfly that lives a day Has lived eternity.

    T.S. Eliot, “A Lyric”

    15 x 13 x 10 inches

My primary drive as a visual artist has been that of story telling from a personal point of departure or connection. To establish this connection, I often use historical documents and artifacts as a visual point of departure in my work.  As I have spent most of my life in the country, responding to nature and human dependence on the land are the strongest themes in my work.
