Brushstroke Necklace by Yiqi Sun, OCADU

Title: Brushstroke

Materials: Copper, cotton, jade, zinc, brass, aluminum. W 26 cm x H 11 cm. October 18rd, 2025

This piece was inspired by the traditional Chinese metalsmithing technique Cuojinyin (错金银), in which gold and silver are inlaid into bronze artifacts. I was drawn to the striking contrast between the luminous gold and silver surfaces and the dark, aged bronze background. To reinterpret this historical technique in a contemporary way, I used simple leafing methods to create an abstract, brushstroke effect that echoes the appearance of traditional inlay.

The form was developed using tubing techniques, allowing me to create a voluminous, bulbous shape while minimizing material usage. This approach results in a lightweight piece that retains a strong visual presence and a sense of substantiality despite its reduced weight.
