I gathered memories of worlds that have been lost to greed: the city of Laputa adrift and abandoned in the animated film Castle in the Sky, the online world of Eden Eternal hollowed out by monetization and shut down, and my uncle’s humble sushi shop in Montreal soon to be demolished for a condo development. Each of these parallels were once a community that felt whole, but are now slipping into ruins. Guide to Eden is my response to these lost communities. It is an architectural relic that rests on the upper pointer finger. A castle rises from the band, while two rings rotate beneath it: one resembling land and the other lined with towers of reverse-set gemstones and a cuneiform-inspired epitaph. Inspired by inscriptions from the film, the epitaph reads: “Light, be reborn ” And when worn on the upper pointer finger, the ring becomes a guide that points the wearer towards what is lost and what they wish to protect.
