Jiangshi Brooch by Zhangchi Shen
Title: Jiangshi Brooch. Copper, sterling silver, steel. Chasing, enamel painting, 4 x 3 x 0.5, 2025.
This brooch is inspired by Taoism, a traditional Chinese religion. Zombies appear frequently in both Western and Eastern films, but their forms are very different. I find it interesting how the same element transforms across cultures, reflecting differences in ways of thinking, daily life, clothing, and visual traditions. In this Chinese zombie figure, I incorporated elements such as Taoist talismans, traditional clothing, totems, and Chinese calligraphy. I enjoy integrating traditional cultural elements into an international street-style aesthetic. This approach gives my work a stronger sense of uniqueness while also helping people understand where I come from and the culture I represent.
