Nuwa Mending the Sky Neckpiece by Yiqi Sun
Nuwa Mending the Sky Neck Piece in silver and copper. W 15 cm x H 15 cm x D 2 cm. 2025.
This artwork is influenced by Nuwa, one of the original creator deities in Chinese mythology. Notably, it is also said that this powerful goddess is believed to be the creator of mankind. Accordingly, since ancient China was a fiercely matriarchal society, it elevated Nuwa as one of the most significant and revered deities in Chinese mythology.
Moreover, the narrative of Nuwa mending the sky conveys a battle between two gods that tore a hole in the sky. As a result, the floodgates were opened, sending a deluge of water to earth, threatening to drown mankind. Unable to bear the sight of their suffering, Nuwa gathered five elemental stones from the earth and refined them into a mystical stone to mend the sky and restore equilibrium. Essentially, Nuwa embodies both power and compassion, reflecting her unique balance of strength and benevolence.
