Sandy Maniapik

Bear head stud earrings of carved black baleen. Artist Sandy Maniapik is from Pangnirtung. These polished studs measure approx. 15 x 11 mm.

Baleen is a light and durable material. The keratine-based plates are formed in the whale's mouth and help filter its food (krill) from water.
