Symbolic of a painful, burgeoning nostalgia, this little insect has come to represent the deepening divide between my present self and my child self. Although many people may consider them pests, stink bugs remind me of the many summers I spent with my family up in Northern Ontario as a child: the tall grass and the sunsets, eating dinner with my family, visiting my Grandmother and going for late night ice cream. They are a symbol that acknowledges my reluctant acceptance of the ephemeral and fleeting nature of our existence: where once-fond memories are re-experienced as far and fading, dichotomized by a sense of profound sadness and an impossible longing for the past.
