What Lies Inside Brooch by Matias Beaulieu

Brooch: What Lies Inside, made in October 2025.
- 925 sterling silver, maple wood
- Metal forming, brazing, wood setting, engraving, hinged mechanism, laser welding
- 60 mm x 60 mm x 30 mm

This brooch takes the form of a closed, refined object, a round box topped with a wooden cabochon. From the outside, it presents itself as a simple, contained, almost silent surface.

When opened, the object transforms. It reveals a living interior space, structured by a set of articulated elements that unfold like an arborescent form. The contrast between the controlled exterior and the expanding interior becomes the core of the piece. The wood used comes from the same material as my jeweler’s bench, made with my grandfather.

This piece emerges from a reflection initially sparked by the desire to pay tribute to my grandfather; on the way a person can be formed. Some may appear simple or reserved, while they carry within them a great inner richness, complex and in motion, which does not reveal itself immediately.

It stems from the idea that what we first perceive of someone does not always reflect what they contain. It invites a form of curiosity toward others, allowing time to reveal what is not immediately visible.
