xxixx Glasses by Zhangchi Shen

Title: xxixx Glasses. Acrylic, sterling silver, cubic zirconia. Laser cutting, dyeing, tube setting, 3 x 6 x 8, 2025.

This work was inspired by my first experience working with acrylic. I wanted to explore the material more deeply by developing a visual language based on its inherent properties. Because I have been nearsighted since childhood, I have always worn glasses. The transparency and plasticity of acrylic, together with laser-cutting techniques, led me to the idea of making a pair of glasses. At the same time, I am very interested in street culture. I wanted to create a pair of glasses intended purely as an accessory, rather than as everyday prescription glasses or sunglasses. I chose the goldfish—an element often seen in East Asian street culture—as the motif for the temples. The lenses are built from layered forms of water ripples and bones, creating a stronger sense of depth and visual impact. The work is purely decorative and has no functional purpose.
