Woven Works
These new works are made from my re-purposed paintings. By using some of my past paintings as a material, I am expressing a symbolic and practical gesture in support of environmental action. These works combine and transform materiality with visual abstraction. Previously painted works—acrylic on canvas—have been deconstructed by hand cutting particular paintings into strips and weaving them back together again. This has resulted in works that continue to speak to the method of painting as the original brushwork is still present, creating a new work which is reinvented and derived from chance (without a known outcome). While the hand of the artist or process remains evident through the form, colour and brush work, the paintings become reinvented as each strip contrasts and complements one another as they crisscross and create new patterns or juxtapositions of imagery.
