    Communion II

"This sculpture stems from a piece a created in response to my time aboard the Canada C3 Expedition marking the 150th Anniversary of Canada’s Confederation. That piece, Who is Speaking? Who is Listening? was made out of porcelain elements in the shape of ear trumpets, referencing animal horns traditionally used as hearing aids. I wanted to draw attention to the quality of both speaking and listening as foundational to moving forward. I love this simple shape, how light and shadow falls on the form. When I began playing with them in pairs, I saw how when they are placed opposite each other they can curl under the other form, support it and hold it tight. They can stabilize the other, keep each other in balance. To commune is a very deep and vulnerable state, one where you feel heard."

    Porcelain, terra sigillata

Gold Topaz Sculpture.  In a large graceful sweep, this one of a kind sculpture measures 18 x 12 x 11 cm.

The Silk Series was inspired by the artist's mother with whom she made candies and chocolates. Realizing the viscosity of molten sugar is similar to molten glass, Taygan has developed the form since 2014 by pulling the glass repeatedly, as one pulls taffy candy.

Atalanta was the only woman to take part in the Calydonian Boar hunt alongside Theseus and Meleager. With the quarry cornered, the hunt devolved into chaos. Peleus misses his mark and accidentally kills Eurytion while Atalanta raises her bow steady and sure, draws, and strikes first blood. Meleager is awed and awards her the hide as an honour prize.

    (Re)constructed Narrative #3. Blown and fused glass, 1 ½” (h) x 3 ½” x 3 ½”.

(Re)Constructed Narrative re-purposes remnant objects into a deconstructed line. It investigates the history given to an object, embellishing and fabricating events. The order is established through an imagined logic, questioning fact and fiction. The narrative playfully recounts systems and image in broken moments.

"A year in paces, a morning ritual of walking has led me to collect numerous bird nests from the thickets along Ottawa’s waterways. In this piece, I have cast each nest in lead salvaged from the torn out ironwork of Parliament Hill— an act of preservation at the perceived fragility of a tiny sanctuary and an exploration of the weighted concept of home and domesticity."
